Being in bed is not the same as getting sleep

Reel Script 7: Bed Time vs. Sleep Time

🎬 Script

(Visual: Host looks energetic and positive, holding the book)

Hook:

You're in bed for 8 hours. You think you got 8 hours of sleep.

You didn't.

Body:

This is Sleep Efficiency: the percentage of time you're in bed actually asleep.

According to Matthew Walker, healthy sleep efficiency is about 90%.

That means 8 hours in bed is, at best, only 7.2 hours of real sleep. The rest is time spent tossing, turning, and falling asleep.

Lying in bed awake is the enemy. Walker's advice: If you're still awake after 20 minutes, get out of bed.

Your brain must relearn that your bed is for sleeping, not for lying awake.

Closing:

How do you get that deep, efficient sleep?

It all happens in 4 distinct stages.

Follow to find out what happens in Stage 1.

📚 Notes & Sources

  • Note: This script is based on Matthew Walker's widely cited advice on "Sleep Efficiency."

  • Book Sources: This specific concept is not detailed in the text you provided, but it is a fundamental part of his sleep hygiene recommendations, as confirmed by web sources.

  • Web Sources:

    • (MasterClass, WSJ) - Confirms Walker's 90% sleep efficiency target and his "20-minute rule" to get out of bed.

    • (Business Insider) - Re-confirms the 20-minute rule and the principle of associating the bed with sleep.

As a reminder, to create the next 4 reels on the Stages of Sleep, I will need the text from the book that describes them, as it wasn't in the file you uploaded.

Please provide that text, and I'll get started on Stage 1.
